I am so bummed I was sick and couldn't hang out with you. But we'll make it happen soon. Thank you for helping me re-frame anger as something sacred and full of information. You are wonderful and the best. OK BYE!

Emma, I finally finished Trust Exercise this fall, and I'm obsessed! I started off by listening to it, which helped me get into the voice. I have an essay in me about how I'm mad that it was being framed as a "MeToo" novel -- I think that might have been necessary for marketing, but I think it doesn't quite describe all that the novel is doing with questions of memory, justice, and violence. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on the novel and what your students think!

Definitely not! It was written much before that era too. In brief my thoughts are that it did something I’d never quite seen before which in and of itself is worth experiencing

I really needed to read this, as a fat person and a writer. As a fat person who was just at a literary festival and coming up against my own self-consciousness about my body, which is also nonbinary but also fat and in its fatness very femme. So, that. But also as a writer who is fearful of writing my own truth in my newsletter (in my personal debut experience) because I'm scared of backlash. This is such a reminder to me of so many essential things they're too long to list here. Thank you so much for writing it (and I am now going to read the piece that started it all and Greenwell's response!).

Perfectly timed Substack because I just picked up Trust Exercise from the library! I know nothing about it but am now excited by the prospect of a weird POV. Susan Choi is a new to me author that I was introduced to after reading her newest novel Flashlight.

I really enjoyed it. I’m a sucker for multiple POV and challenging mother/daughter dynamics. Plus I learned a lot about Korean and Japanese history.
