People who aren’t on TikTok associate it with commercial fiction but the best part about Lit Tok are all the creators championing weird and under the radar books!
"My friend the writer Annie Liontas recently told me that after 35 all the coping mechanisms you used to make it to 35 stop working." Oof. Excuse me while I stare at the wall contemplating that.
I'm not a writer myself but this was an interesting look at the business, thank you.
This really stuck with me: "In effect, this means that if you’re a reader, big publishing houses are taking your choices away from you, only telling you about the perhaps twenty books a year they want you to buy." What suggestions do you have for readers to bring some choice back to ourselves?
Good question, it's tough. I would recommend The Millions books preview that they do twice a year, as well as building your own list of authors whose work you like, subscribing to their newsletters or social media, and then seeking out their books. I'd also make a goal to read a certain percentage of your books each year from small presses like Astra House, Catapult, Graywolf, Coffee House, Counterpoint, Feminist Press, and more
This is a weird (perfect) time to read this, because my first book just came out and I'm 43 and it feels a bit like, I should have figured things out by now, how am I still flailing? I'm in India, and TikTok is banned her, which is annoying. Thank you for writing this <3
I am turning 30 on November 1st and am sad that I will no longer be able to publish a book in my 20s, like I had wanted since I was a kid. But this has given me so much solace. Thank you.

You have taught me this!!

Right? I thought that was so brilliant and can’t wait for them to write about it
As a writer in my mid-30s whose book has languished in publisher submission hell for years now…this essay was so validating. Thank you 💕
I’m so glad Sarah! I’m sorry about the languishing though

thank you Esmé! Hehe trying to get better
As a fellow elder millennial who is currently querying her first novel, I really appreciate this perspective. Thank you ❤️
Hehe! Maybe the things will come from places we don’t expect
Yeah, I am also looking for a new job while querying so I am burned out in so many ways but still looking for hope and joy wherever I can find them :)
So lovely to meet you on Friday and looking forward to seeing you at the Miami Book Fair! ❤️
The best and me too! Cannot wait to drink delicious drinks

The last two paragraphs are what my 37 year old daughter is going through right now! Again, as in Housemates, you nail it! Thank you.
